Benny was born in 1920 in Edmonton, Middlesex to Polish born parents Harry and Fanny née Schonberg. Benny’s father worked as a barber and died in 1937.

Benny was the wireless operator/air gunner on Wellington X3338 which departed RAF Chipping Warden on a daylight training exercise. The aircraft crashed near Chipping Warden after an engine failure.
