The Glider Pilot Regiment (GPR) was an elite regiment of the British Army which was formed in World War Two. Members of The Regiment were volunteers from all over the Army. Only those who achieved the highest standards were selected for flying training. They first of all learned to fly powered aircraft before learning to fly gliders. In early 1945, several hundred RAF pilots learned to fly gliders to fill the gap created when the GPR lost so many of its members during the battle for Arnhem in September 1944.
