Headstone Inscription
‘DEEPLY MOURNED BY MOTHER, BROTHER AND SISTER. ALWAYS IN OUR THOUGHTS’

Sonny was born in 1926 to Solomon and Deborah nee Phillips. Sonny’s headstone states that he had a brother and sister but little else is known to date about his early life.

Sonny was on board Halifax PP349 which took off from RAF Linton-on-Ouse. Shortly after takeoff, while in the initial climb, the crew informed ground that a fire had erupted on board and elected to return for an emergency landing. During a last turn to the left, the aircraft went out of control, lost height and crashed in a huge explosion in a field on the Tancred Estate, between Whixley & Linton on Ouse, located 2 and a half miles southwest of the airfield. All seven crew members were killed.
