Harold was born in 1921 in Marylebone, London to Bertie who was born in South Africa and Phyllis née Blaiberg and he had an older sister Beryl. Their mother died two months after Harold was born and their father who was a co-director of a gown makers died in 1940. Harold’s sister Beryl Annette volunteered as an ARP warden and married Gordon Rackow.
