Ralph was the son of Solomon and Hannah née Lesser of Salford, Manchester. Husband of Isobel née Balon. Ralph’s father Solomon was a cloth cap manufacturer in Salford.

Ralph was the youngest of six children. His siblings were Lawrence, Eleanora who married Jonas Finestone, Israel, Myra who married Leopold Diamond and Jacob who married Isabelle Fredman. Ralph was the Vice President and previously the treasurer of the Waterpark Jewish club in Manchester. He married Iris in 1938 and volunteered for the RAF two years later in 1940. Iris was a volunteer in the WAAF and as the Last Post sounded at Ralph’s graveside she stood and saluted wearing her WAAF uniform.

Ralph was the navigator of Wellington R3232 which took off from RAF Lossiemouth on a training navigation exercise. The aircraft crashed near Auchtermuchty and it is thought that engine failure was the cause of the accident.
