Maurice was born in 1923 in Mile End, London the son of Benjamin and Jane née Raymond and was one of ten children. After leaving school Maurice worked as a sewing machine mechanic. Maurice’s father Benjamin also served in the RAF as a corporal in 909 Balloon Squadron.

Aged 21, Maurice married Frances Williamson in Newark in April 1944 five months before he was killed.

Maurice was the wireless operator/air gunner on Lancaster PB535 which took off from RAF Dunholme Lodge on a night operation to Darmstadt. The aircraft crashed at 01.30 on the 12 Sept 1944 near Roxheim a small town 6 km south of Worms.
